"Inspiration for my work comes from art historical, musical, literary sources, and often fresh local produce. The hand formed ceramic objects are meant to fool the eye and express their unique character, blemishes and all. I do not use molds and decals because my intent is to for the roughness of the human hand and sculpture body to be evident in their creation. I use sculpture clay, underglaze, mason stains, glaze, overglaze, and lusters in multiple firings to achieve a naturalistic color palette in the low fire range. The “Cup Runneth Over” series takes the still-life and trompe l’oeil traditions a step further by capturing the cataclysmic forces of life, both of creation and destruction, overflowing its crumbling walls. This work combines ties to mythology with personal narratives using the classic forms of Wedgwood pottery which are scaled up to giant proportions, literally run over with tire tread, and/or stepped on."

Fitz Gibbon's work is in the collection of five museums including the Crocker Art Museum and the Di Rose Art Preserve.
