Craig Martinez: Jesus, Vultures and Other Responders
Craig Martinez is a Sacramento-based artist whose sculptures and paintings explore the complexities of the human condition, redemption, and spirituality. Drawing from American history, Indigenous traditions, Jungian psychology, and his own Catholic upbringing, Martinez transforms reclaimed materials into textured, emotionally charged figures. A former graphic designer turned college professor, he made a life-changing shift in 2009 to focus more deeply on artmaking. Crows, scaffolds, and worn surfaces appear often in his work, symbolizing loss, transformation, and unseen beauty. His pieces invite reflection on mortality, identity, and the quiet, persistent hope of renewal.
